Ener-Vate team visit FENAGY’s Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) production facility and District Heat Network (DHN), Sonder Felding in Denmark

Last week, Ener-Vate’s Senior Account Manager Natalie Stewart and Head of EAMS Peter Nissen joined our client Metropolitan Thames Valley alongside representatives from Countryside Partnerships and Hemiko on a trip to Denmark 🇩🇰 to Visit FENAGY’s Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) production facility and District Heat Network (DHN), Sonder Felding.

Sonder Felding is a low rise housing development in Billund, Denmark, comprising of c750 homes which are serviced by a C02 ASHP fed DHN system.

Natalie and Pete were able to experience the 3.5MW ASHP in action at the development along with insightful discussions and presentations from Fenagy’s Ebbe Nørgaard about the development and progression of ASHP technology over the past 10 years, the commerciality and residential impact or operating a C02 ASHP DHN, and how Denmark are utilising networks and thermal storage technology for the benefit of the provider and consumer, and the environment.

Natalie said ‘We had a brilliant day experiencing how Denmark produce and operate their C02 ASHP’s. It’s been an invaluable experience for me and really insightful to understand a different way of thinking in terms of the operation, which could be hugely beneficial to the end user. Lots of interesting learnings can be taken from our colleagues in Denmark which could really benefit our DHN operations here in the UK’.

Peter said “It was an excellent day spent in the very capable hands of Fenagy in Denmark establishing the suitability of their CO2 air source heat pumps for a medium rise residential roof top application in London serving a large heat network. We were very impressed with the quality of the equipment, the factory conditions where they are assembled and the installation we visited at Sonder Felding. In terms of achieving our goals for the day, the mission was a success with concerns allayed, questions answered and perceptions altered about this still relatively new heat decarbonisation technology in the UK”.
